Some historians would argue that the Mason and Hamlin BB was the first real limited production exotic piano due to its very high price point in it’s day, and cult like following. I just had a look at the M&H homepage to get an impression of what people are talking about here and I found the all the grands to be quite heavy, so I decided to make a weight comparison of some concert grands: Mason & Hamlin CC (284): 635 kg.
Manufactured: 1958 - 1959 Made in: United States Most Mason & Hamlin consoles are rather staid and plain-looking. This piano is so expressive and the action is smooth and responsive! The tone absolutely "sings". The Mason & Hamlin Model BB redefines what a 7-ft piano should be, with power and sustain usually reserved for concert grands pianos. A Beautiful and Well Made French Provincial Style Upright Console Piano by Mason & Hamlin. Actually they aren't, but they look like they could! They are built to handle a direct nuclear attack. Piano was rebuilt and refinished in 2001, excellent playing condition. Mason & Hamlin pianos have extremely thick rims and are constructed like.a Sherman tank. A440 Pianos is the largest rebuilder of pianos in the South-East Region. Impeccable workmanship and excellent scale designs make Mason and Hamlins sought after by many pianists. The newest version is based on that design. Only 15 Vintage CC concert grands in the 94' configuration were ever produced. Also, if you look at the photos of underneath the piano, you will notice the massive width of the rim. Newly introduced at winter NAMM 2005, is the Mason and Hamlin Model CC94 (94') concert grand with 2 tension resonators. The soundboard's crown is part of what allows a piano to "sing" and not be hollow-sounding or dead. Manufactured in 1983 in Mason & Hamlin's East Rochester (NY) factory, this piano is one heavily constructed instrument and features the patented Tension Resonator which helps ensure the crown (or curvature) of the soundboard. So, when you find benches that aren't all scratched up (and don't appear to have been banged around), you can usually get a good sense of how the rest of the piano was treated. Funny thing, since benches are fairly long, they tend to get used for "extra seating" when you go to Grandma's for Thanksgiving or other large family gatherings. The matching duet bench is sturdy and not beat up like many benches.
